Balsam Gap Protected: A Win for the Blue Ridge Parkway

In a major conservation win for Western North Carolina, The Conservation Fund has secured the 3,850-acre Balsam Gap property, a stunning stretch of land nestled in the Great Balsam Mountains along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This project marks a significant milestone in preserving the scenic beauty, biodiversity, and economic vitality of the region, continuing a legacy of land protection efforts that span more than 25 years.

Why Balsam Gap Matters

Balsam Gap is more than just a beautiful spot on the map. The property plays a key role in connecting over 770,000 acres of previously conserved lands, contributing to an expansive network of protected forests, wildlife corridors, and clean water sources. Located alongside the Blue Ridge Parkway — one of the country’s most visited national treasures — the land offers breathtaking views that draw millions of visitors each year.

The Balsam Gap property’s nearly four-mile boundary with the Parkway ensures that iconic overlooks and lush forests will remain undisturbed. This move not only enhances the natural beauty of the area but also solidifies the preservation of a pristine landscape for hikers, campers and outdoor enthusiasts.

How It Benefits the Local Community

Protecting Balsam Gap isn’t just about preserving nature; it’s also about supporting the local community. The property sits in Jackson and Haywood counties, where nature-based tourism is a major economic driver. With the area’s abundant trails, mountain views, and outdoor activities, it generates nearly $400 million annually in revenue.

Furthermore, by preserving working forests and wildlife habitats, the project helps support timber jobs, ensures cleaner water for local rivers and streams, and safeguards critical wildlife migration corridors. In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s damage to the region, conservation projects like this are more important than ever for rebuilding the local economy.

A Legacy of Perseverance and Collaboration

The push to protect this land has been a long journey. According to Michael Leonard, a Senior Advisor at The Conservation Fund and former Board Chair, the project dates back a quarter of a century. Despite early setbacks, the persistence of The Conservation Fund’s team and its partners paid off.

“Our efforts to protect this property go back 25 years,” said Leonard. “While our initial attempts were unsuccessful and we feared we might have lost our chance, we kept at it because its proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway made it vital. I’m thrilled that years of perseverance brought about this rare second chance for success.”

Leonard credited the Stanback family for their generosity and commitment, which were key to the project’s success. Their contributions, alongside federal, state, and private donors, helped make this conservation effort a reality.

A Strong Partnership for Lasting Impact

This victory for the environment was made possible thanks to the collaboration of several dedicated organizations. Mainspring Conservation Trust holds a 1,147-acre easement that extends a no-cut buffer next to the Parkway. Additionally, the North Carolina Forest Service now oversees a 2,703-acre working forest easement, ensuring that timber resources will continue to support the local economy while maintaining the area’s natural beauty.

“This project represents an incredible opportunity to protect a landscape rich in conservation values,” said Mainspring Executive Director Jordan Smith. “Its proximity to the Parkway and adjacency to conserved lands made it an easy decision for us. We’re deeply grateful to The Conservation Fund and to the landowners for their generosity.”

The Balsam Gap conservation effort is part of a larger initiative to protect over 55,000 acres in the Great Balsam Mountains. It’s the latest in a long list of successful conservation projects supported by the U.S. Forest Service’s Forest Legacy Program, Mainspring Conservation Trust, and the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, alongside private donors.

“This conservation easement is a testament to the power of partnership and patience,” said Jonathan Murray, Forest Legacy Coordinator for the North Carolina Forest Service. “Thanks to the collaboration between The Conservation Fund, Mainspring, the Stanbacks, and the Forest Service, this land will be protected forever.”

A Win for Nature and People

This protection of the Balsam Gap property exemplifies what’s possible when communities, organizations, and individuals work together with a shared vision. It’s not just about saving trees or streams; it’s about ensuring that the natural treasures of North Carolina continue to enrich the lives of all who live and visit here.

The Conservation Fund is proud to be part of this enduring effort. As we look ahead, we remain committed to safeguarding the lands that sustain us all — today and for generations to come.
