South Dakota’s Newton Hills State Park Expands

The Conservation Fund is proud to announce the protection of 212 acres of forestland that will expand South Dakota’s Newton Hills State Park and adjacent public lands.

The dark forests of South Dakota’s Coteau des Prairie rise like a fortress from the surrounding plains. Situated just south of Sioux Falls, the Midwest’s fastest-growing city, it calls to hikers, hunters, and families looking to connect with nature. And thanks to a partnership between The Conservation Fund, South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks (GFP), and the U.S. Forest Service, more of it is now protected.

Newton Hills State Park and adjacent public lands are the big winners in this recent land purchase, which expands the park by 36 acres and preserves an additional 176 acres that extends the adjacent Johnson and McKee Game Production Areas – public land managed for wildlife protection and hunting. This intact native forestland is home to the only oak species native to the state, the bur oak, that is resilient to extreme hot and cold temperatures due to its thick bark and deep taproots.

“This area is an important ecological bridge to connect formerly conserved lands in the state,” said Clint Miller, Midwest Regional Director with The Conservation Fund. “South Dakota is home to a rich web of forests, parks and outdoor recreation opportunities, and The Conservation Fund is proud to help protect these vital lands.”

The acquired property will connect a 1,970-acre corridor of public land, open for hiking, hunting, birdwatching, and other recreational activities. It will also grow the Game Production Area to support local wildlife populations and enhance opportunities for hunting and fishing along the Big Sioux River. This initiative was made possible through GFP state funds, a grant from the U.S. Forest Service’s Forest Legacy Program, and support from the National Wild Turkey Federation.
