Gary was born and raised on the Chesapeake Bay of Maryland before heading west where he graduated from Colorado State University with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Wildlife Biology and Botany.

He started as a volunteer intern during college for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service where he worked for nearly 35 years in various management positions within the National Wildlife Refuge System at field offices in Colorado, Kansas and Montana.
