Op-ed: Conservation’s Role in a Cleaner Energy Future

The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) found that, with our current pace of carbon emissions, we are not on track to achieve the world’s most important climate goal — keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Given the new infrastructure development required to transition to a low-carbon, green energy future, it can seem as though these two initiatives contradict one another. However, there is one thing that new energy infrastructure and biodiversity both need to thrive: land. Under the Biden administration, the U.S. raced to do its part by launching efforts to both halve the country’s carbon emissions and protect biodiversity on 30% of its land by 2030.

Larry Selzer, CEO and president of The Conservation Fund recently discussed why land conservation is such a critical catalyst for reaching our nation’s goals of climate mitigation and the swift transition to a low-carbon energy system in The Hill.
